The unsustainable production of palm oil is one of the biggest threats to the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. This project explores the impact that palm oil is having on the fascinating rainforest creatures that live there, and how we can help by using sustainable palm oil. Students will learn about rainforest animals, different cultures, food production as well as how to be sustainable when shopping.

Learn about the rainforests of South East Asia, why they and the amazing species that live there are so threatened by unsustainable palm oil production and find out what you can do to help.

Our experts will support you every step of the way, delivering a teacher kickstarter session, workshops for each participating class in school and in the zoo as well as providing all the resources you need to take learning across the curriculum.

WORKSHOP 1 (In school)

What is a rainforest? In the first workshop we will discuss the characteristics of the rainforest. We will explore the human benefits of the rainforest through the products that we get from there. We’ll investigate the incredible variety of animals and plants found to get your learners excited about the rainforest and recognise just how important it is. We’ll introduce the concept of deforestation and one of the current largest causes – Palm Oil.

WORKSHOP 2 (In school)

The second workshop is all about palm oil.  After a recap of deforestation, we will focus on the cause. Using interactive play the students will learn that palm oil is found in everyday items and the reason why it is used instead of alternative oils. They will then learn the definition of sustainable and how sustainable palm oil is made. The session ends with all the things Chester zoo are doing to help combat the deforestation crisis.

WORKSHOP 3 (In school)

This workshop will then teach the solution to this problem that the students can all do at home. It will empower them to make the right choices for a sustainable future. By playing a specially designed game they will learn how to shop sustainably and how it will positively affect the rainforest and all its inhabitants. By doing a casual quiz game we can then see how much the students have learned from this project.

ZOO VISIT

During your school trip to the zoo you will meet with one of our team for a short session with an activity and tour around our animal habitats to see the animals that are native to Indonesia and recap some of things we learnt.

The delivery offer includes:

  • A virtual Kickstarter meeting to introduce the school staff to the project, additional FREE learning resources that we have on offer, and ideas for how the teachers can make this a cross-curricular project for all year groups.
  • 3 Conservation Educator led interactive workshops in the school setting for each class
  • Free entrance for participating classes to Chester Zoo including teaching and activities led by the education team.

This project offer is aimed at KS2 but can be adapted to a slightly higher or lower Key Stage on request.
