What can we do to prevent animals from becoming extinct?
To make a difference to the future of plants and animals currently under threat of extinction, we’re all going to have to work together. Everyone has a role to play, however big or small.
At Chester Zoo, we have a whole team of experts hard at work to protect wildlife. Their research focuses on six key regions around the globe and aims to help us to understand the growing threats wildlife face. All that knowledge and scientific evidence can have a huge impact globally in finding conservation solutions. We won’t stand back and let such threats go unchecked, we’ll lead the way.
But what can YOU do to support us? Volunteering and fundraising are two incredibly important roles, along with donating.

To continue doing all we can to prevent animals from becoming extinct, Chester Zoo’s conservation teams need funding. We can’t do this alone. That’s where our amazing fundraisers come in. Over the years they’ve raised thousands of pounds to enable our experts, partners and collaborators worldwide to conduct pioneering research that brings us a step closer to preventing extinction.
Our fundraisers have ran, swam and baked their way into making a difference. People have climbed mountains, trekked great distances and jumped out of planes. But it’s not all about completing impressive, adrenaline-filled challenges. We value every single contribution we receive. So why not arrange a garage sale or run a tombola at the next school fair? Everyone of us can help, together we can make a big difference.
Through their incredible efforts, our fundraisers have even inspired other people to get involved and act for wildlife today. With their help, we’re a force to be reckoned with.
At Chester Zoo, we take great pride in our award-winning volunteers. Every single one of them is doing something truly great by contributing to our time-critical work. They play vital roles in furthering our education, scientific and conservation mission by providing valuable support to our paid staff. This typically means working in our customer service, education and fundraising departments.
Our volunteers spend a lot of time interacting with members of the public and so play a big part in educating people about the threats currently facing the natural world. They make sure that everyone who comes through our gates not only has a wonderful experience but leaves knowing what they can do to prevent animals from becoming extinct. Together, we can make a difference.
Between them, our volunteers have contributed thousands upon thousands of hours of their own time to help us pursue our goals of ending extinction. Each brings with them boundless enthusiasm for both the zoo, its mission and goals. We are so grateful for all their hard work and simply couldn’t do it without them.
