Tiny meerkat pups pop up for the first time

Four baby meerkats have made their public debuts.

The pups were born in August but have only just started to show their faces as their parents have kept them well protected in their burrows until now.

The tiny youngsters are already learning how to forage for food but keepers have yet to give them names as it's too early to confirm their sexes.

Meerkat facts

  • Our latest quartet of meerkat pups were born on 21 August 2014
  • Once our keepers have determined the sex of the pups, they will then decide on names
  • Meerkats are native to Angola, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa
  • Most meerkats live in underground burrows in large groups of around 30 individuals called a gang or a mob
  • Meerkat mobs spend a lot of their time grooming and playing together to keep the family as a tight unit
  • Meerkats have scent pouches below their tails and will rub these pouches on rocks and plants to mark their territory
  • They have dark patches around their eyes that act to cut down on the glare and help them see far into the distance
  • Meerkats have four toes on each feet and very long, non-retractable claws to help them dig
  • Meerkats can close their ears to keep dirt out while digging
