UK & Europe
Hares and wildcats, kingfishers and kites, oaks and elders: UK wildlife is celebrated in literature, film and art. Woodlands, hedgerows, moors and wetlands are part of our cultural heritage. Yet, like habitats across the continent, they face threats from changes in agricultural practices, habitat fragmentation, droughts, floods, and over-exploitation.
Chester Zoo is a global conservation charity, but we also act for UK wildlife and wildlife in Europe. With one in six British species threatened by extinction, our conservation projects are more vital than ever.
Our Current Focus:
Our Conservation Education and Engagement teams deliver biodiversity education in the community, helping empower people of all ages to engage in conservation practices ranging from grassroots to professional levels.
Our species experts support the recovery of plants and animals on the brink of extinction in the UK through breeding programmes and partnerships with other UK conservation organisations.
Our Estate Biodiversity team manage an area bigger than the zoo itself for UK wildlife, creating and restoring priority habitats and monitoring species populations.
Our volunteers underpin this work, bringing enthusiasm and extra hands to large-scale replanting projects and initiatives that help make space for nature.
Together, we are protecting biodiversity in Britain and Europe.
