Our science focus areas
Animal health and wellbeing
Through membership of BIAZA and EAZA committees, Chester Zoo influences the development of policies and lead on collaborative research projects actively promoting high wellbeing standards for zoo animals.
Reproduction is key to species survival, and our associated endocrine and behavioural studies are crucial to understanding the reproductive biology of the diverse range of species that depend on conservation breeding programmes.
Our role as research innovators will help society rise to the challenges of biodiversity loss making significant contributions restoration programmes by supporting people to make sustainable choices and mitigation of human-wildlife conflict.
At Chester Zoo we believe that scientific work should be collaborative. Our new Science Centre provides technical laboratory expertise and innovation to meet the growing scientific needs of our zoo and the wider conservation community. Supported by Urenco, the centre of excellence includes a preparation lab, general purpose lab, a clean lab, and a cryopreservation facility, as well as a dedicated training laboratory for the Conservation Training Academy.
