People and Wildlife: Coexistence in the United Kingdom

Chester Zoo, the IUCN SSC Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence Specialist Group, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Natural England, NatureScot, Natural Resources Wales, and the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit of Oxford University are jointly organising a landmark conference on UK focussed human-wildlife conflict and coexistence on April 27th-28th at Chester Zoo.
The conference will bring together conservation professionals, scientists and researchers, policymakers, land managers, community organisations industry specialists and other engaged stakeholders, to explore the unique challenges and opportunities that human-wildlife conflict and coexistence presents in the UK.
Over the two days, it will provide a much needed platform and space for establishing dialogue, exchanging knowledge, learnings and insights across six key themes:
• History and culture of conflict and co-existence
• Insights through science and humanities
• Shifting landscapes of conflict and coexistence
• Policy and regulatory frameworks
• Stakeholder engagement and communication
• Rewilding and recovery through translocations and reintroductions
Through interdisciplinary discussion and collaboration, delegates will explore and debate key issues, approaches, processes and frameworks for fostering human-wildlife coexistence across landscapes and stakeholders in the UK.
The conference will further set upon collaborative initiatives in policy and guidance development to contribute to the UK’s commitments to biodiversity outcomes, sustainable nature recovery and human development goals, through effective management of human-wildlife conflicts, and fostering lasting coexistence.
