This fact file introduces young learners to the incredible life of the swift (Apus apus), one of the UK’s most remarkable migratory birds. It provides key information about the species’ habitat, which spans farmland, wetlands, woodlands, coastal areas, and towns, as well as details of its diet of flying insects and airborne spiders. The fact file also includes fascinating facts, such as the swift weighing about the same as a Cadbury’s Crème Egg, and explains when to spot them in the UK – between April and August.
As well as exploring the biology and behaviour of the swift, the resource encourages learners to take action by installing nest boxes and creating bird-friendly gardens to support the species, which is now endangered in the UK. The swift fact file links directly to science, geography, and citizenship, making it an excellent tool for raising awareness about conservation challenges and inspiring children to get involved in protecting this species.
