This resource is a maths-based activity designed to engage learners in comparing their physical abilities with some impressive UK wildlife.

It highlights record-breaking animals like the hare, which can run at speeds of up to 72 kilometres per hour, and the garden snail, which moves as slowly as 0.05 kilometres per hour.

Students are encouraged to time themselves running a set distance, then compare their speed with that of the hare, calculate the snail’s speed in different units and even try to match the slow pace of a snail over 5 metres. This hands-on activity blends physical exercise with mathematical calculations, promoting both fitness and numeracy.

Students not only learn about UK wildlife but also enhance their understanding of speed, distance, and time. They can engage in predictions, measurements, and conversions, practising essential mathematical skills while learning about the impressive abilities of native species like the pine marten, which can leap up to 4 metres in a single jump.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how to measure speed and distance and compare with native species.

  • Improve mathematical skills through practical application (e.g., time, distance, conversion calculations).

  • Develop physical and observational skills through running, jumping, and recording data.

Curriculum Links:

  • Maths: Measurement, speed, and unit conversions.

  • Science: Understanding animal adaptations and movement.
