An activity designed to teach students about the importance of conservation and the concept of species extinction, focusing on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which is used to assess how close various species are to extinction.

Students are introduced to terms such as "endangered," "critically endangered," and "extinct in the wild," helping them understand the factors contributing to the decline of certain species. It encourages learners to research specific animals using the IUCN Red List, finding details such as population size, geographical distribution, and the threats facing different species.

Students explore real-world conservation challenges and are prompted to think critically about the role of zoos in protecting species from extinction. They can choose to investigate animals like orangutans, red pandas, and Rodrigues fruit bats, learning about the conservation status and efforts to preserve these creatures for future generations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the IUCN Red List and its role in conservation.

  • Learn about different species' conservation statuses, including endangered and critically endangered.

  • Research species-specific threats and conservation efforts.
