Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough
Chester Zoo's Chief Executive Officer, Jamie Christon, celebrates the extraordinary impact of Sir David Attenborough on the conservationist's 100th birthday.
What a life. What a century.
There are people whose work genuinely changes the world. Sir David is one of them. Today, on his 100th birthday, it feels right to pause and celebrate just how extraordinary that contribution has been.
For decades, his distinctive voice and captivating storytelling have brought the spectacles of our planet's biodiversity into living rooms, classrooms, and the hearts of millions. He’s made people stop, watch and feel something profound about the fragility and wonder of life on Earth. The generations of conservationists who can trace their passion back to a David Attenborough documentary are too numerous to count.

I was fortunate enough to meet Sir David in person… and I'll admit, I was nervous! What followed was one of those conversations you don't forget. We sat together talking over sandwiches and he was everything you'd imagine - curious, warm, funny and utterly captivating. He shared stories with the same ease and wonder he brings to the screen. It was a privilege I'll always treasure.
Chester Zoo has wonderful memories of Sir David visiting over the years - spending time with our conservationists and our animal and plant teams, always making time for everyone here he's inspired. He even talked about the friendship he formed with our Founder, George Mottershead, over their shared love of wildlife. That connection means a great deal to us.

At Chester Zoo, we strive every day to do what Sir David has done his whole life - ignite passion for the natural world and inspire the conservationists of the future. His example reminds us why that work matters so much.
One hundred years. Still the greatest voice nature has ever had.
Happy birthday, Sir David... and thank you.
