Yesterday the world lost a pioneering scientist, a tireless advocate for wildlife and one of the most inspiring conservationists of all time - Dame Jane Goodall.

Through her groundbreaking discoveries with chimpanzees in Tanzania, Jane transformed our understanding of our closest relatives. Her work revealed the deep connections between people and nature and ignited a global movement of care, compassion and action for wildlife.

Her belief in the power of education inspired our efforts to engage people in wildlife conservation, helping us all to see that every individual action can make a difference. Today, this runs through our mission to prevent extinction.

Jane’s quiet way and calm manner, as much as her depth of knowledge, has been inspirational to so many primatologists and particularly to women in the field of science. Many more voices are now heard because of her shining example.

While we mourn her loss, her legacy continues. It lives on in the species whose survival depends on conservation, in the people she empowered to act and in the hope she never let go of, even in the face of great challenges.

We must carry her message forward - protecting nature is not a choice but a responsibility and that each of us has the power to change the world for the better.
