Statistics are key to making informed decisions and allow us to have a better insight into our work at Chester Zoo.

This one day beginner course will introduce you to basic statistical analysis so you can get started looking at your data. It is aimed at individuals who want to conduct studies but don’t know where to start with statistics. This is very much an introductory course and expects you to have no prior knowledge of how to analyse data.

We will be using two pieces of software:

Microsoft Excel serves as a useful tool for handling and analysing data and many introductory studies will use Excel as a way of doing quick but effective analysis. We’ll cover:

  • Mean, Mode, Median
  • Error Bars
  • Standard Deviation
  • TTests
  • Pearson’s Correlation

Jamovi is an open statistical piece of software which can be freely downloaded to your PC, this is based on R but is a much friendlier and accessible software to use for more complex studies than Excel allows. We’ll cover:

  • Data organisation
  • TTests
  • Correlation and regression
