At The Oakfield, we serve freshly prepared, locally sourced food. So local, in fact, that we use fruit, vegetables and herbs from our very own kitchen garden wherever possible.

Where it all began
Oakfield House lies at the centre of Chester Zoo’s origin story. Built in 1885, it was once a private home at the heart of the estate. And in 1931, when George Mottershead founded Chester Zoo, it became the family home and the centre from which the Mottersheads realised their vision of a ‘zoo without bars’.
A beloved landmark
Lovingly restored in 2018, Oakfield House remains an iconic Chester Zoo landmark and is now known as The Oakfield – home to a contemporary British pub celebrating good food, history and heritage.
The building retains many stunning original features, including intricate wood panelling in the library and sumptuous luxury in the boardroom. Naturally, the beautiful garden room has views over our award-winning gardens.
What’s on at The Oakfield
There’s more to The Oakfield than meets the eye. As well as pub dining, we host a weekly pub quiz and have various spaces available for private functions.
Pub quiz
Join us on Friday evenings for The Oakfield pub quiz. Open to members of the public – and accessible via the events entrance on Caughall Road – this is your chance to flex those general knowledge skills while helping nature survive and thrive by supporting us.
Private hire
We have spaces for corporate hire or private events, with dedicated meeting and function rooms catering for different sized groups.
From our private meeting rooms upstairs, to larger spaces in the library or garden room, use our state-of-the-art meeting rooms, or let the stunning surroundings of the zoo impress your clients.
