Planning a day at Chester Zoo with older children this summer?
We’ve planned a route that gives them more freedom to explore, discover and lead the way. From species that spark big questions to hidden highlights, it’s full of moments that keep them engaged - and a few that might even surprise them.
Let them take the lead
Hand over the map - or the app - and let them take charge of navigation. It's a great way to get older kids involved from the start, building confidence as they take charge of what's next, check timings and guide the family through the day.
Spot a Sumatran tiger
Head to Islands early and see if you can spot one of the world’s rarest big cats - the Sumatran tiger. These elusive big cats are often active in the morning, but you'll need to look carefully. They're masters of camouflage.
Catch an animal talk
Our animal talks are a brilliant way for older children to deepen their understanding of the natural world. Our Zoo Rangers bring science and conservation to life through engaging sessions.
So check the app or our animal talk schedule before you visit to plan them into your day.

Go eye to eye with meerkats in Heart of Africa
Stop by the meerkat habitat at the entrance to Heart of Africa, where kids can crawl through tunnels and pop up in domes that bring them eye to eye with curious meerkats. It's a great photo opportunity too!
From there, carry on into Heart of Africa. Our brand new 22-acre habitat inspired by the grasslands of central Africa. Here, giraffes, zebras, ostriches and antelopes roam together across a wide, open savannah, just as they would in the wild.
See the zoo from a different point of view
Kids can get even closer to wildlife with a Chester Zoo Experience.
Choose from over 20 Dine, Tour or Meet adventures - from feeding penguins to going behind the scenes in places few people get to see.

How to make your day even more special
Here’s a few extra ways to explore or try something new. Perfect for when there’s still time to spare.
Time to refuel
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, there’s plenty to choose from. Grab something quick from one of our cafés or kiosks, or slow things down with a relaxed family lunch at The Oakfield - our Grade II listed pub with garden views.
You’ll find kid-friendly options across the zoo, plus shaded picnic spots if you’ve brought your own.
Visit the Lemur Walkthrough
Get up close to free-roaming lemurs in this immersive walkthrough. Older kids will love watching how they move, interact and explore - and pick up some fascinating facts from our Zoo Rangers along the way.
