Paul the orangutan was a big favourite with our visitors – extremely popular. He came to the zoo in 1958 at the age of three. He could be seen almost daily outside his enclosure opposite the Rainbow Souvenir Shop. Visitors loved him so much that they used to send him parcels of fruit after they’d visited the zoo, and he even received Christmas cards! His companion was Jimmy, who was also an orangutan. They were inseparable.He sadly passed away after a long illness, at the age of 23 years.
