The award is in recognition of the work Ray, who is Chester Zoo’s Maintenance Manager, has done to develop the Zoo’s environmental projects.

Chester Zoo’s Head of Estates Steve O’ Brien said: ‰ÛÏRay was a founder member of Chester Zoo’s original ‰Û÷green initiatives’ team, a staff and management group dedicated to developing sound environmental practices onsite and worldwide.

‰ÛÏRay’s enthusiasm and championing of environmental management has gone beyond compliance into active improvement programmes and advocacy both within and outside of the zoo.

‰ÛÏIf you asked him, Ray would say that he was ‰ÛÏonly doing his job‰Û and that others should rightly take their share of the credit.åÊ However, without his enthusiasm and buy-in, the ideas we have would not turn into reality.‰Û

Ray, who has been at the zoo for 21 years, said improving environmental performance was a continual process but the rewards were worth the effort.

He added: ‰ÛÏI am delighted to have won this award. It’s a credit to the entire team at Chester Zoo ‰ÛÒ ethical business practice is increasingly important and the responsible management of environmental demands is essential to this.

‰ÛÏA huge effort has been put in by colleagues throughout the Zoo for a number of years to improve environmental performance, working in areas such as energy, water, waste, transport and on local biodiversity initiatives.‰Û
