European College of Zoological Medicine Resident in Zoo Health Management

I am working as the ECZM resident in Zoo Health Management at Chester Zoo. The aim of this residency is to become specialised in zoological medicine through development of both clinical and research knowledge.

Prior to being at Chester Zoo, I started my veterinary career in general small animal and exotics practice. I have carried out clinical placements in zoos throughout the UK, as well as the USA and Australia. I also was fortunate enough to work in Malawi as a wildlife veterinarian where I was involved with rescue and rehabilitation efforts. During this time, I conducted research into the veterinary care of Temminck’s pangolins (Smutsia temminckii) confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade.

As well as continuing my pangolin research, I am working on a project investigating the prevalence and significance of thyroid disease in captive Eastern bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci). Ensuring the health of this captive population is essential for this critically endangered species to survive.
