Project:

PhD Natural Science, Manchester Metropolitan University in Conservation genetics in the Critically Endangered Bermuda skink (Plestiodon longirostris)

I obtained my Undergraduate degree from the University of Exeter in 2012, followed by a Masters by Research, which looked at manipulating microclimate to offset the effects of climate change for at risk species. After achieving my Masters, I worked supporting Higher Education teaching as an Assistant Lab Manager, before deciding I wanted to challenge myself further by undertaking a PhD on a species and topic I am passionate about.

My research with Chester Zoo focuses on the conservation genetics of the Bermuda skink. The Bermuda skink is endemic to Bermuda and is the only endemic terrestrial vertebrate found there. It is classified as Critically Endangered as a result of its limited range and small and declining populations. My project will explore the genetic differences between the isolated populations of the Bermuda skink, looking at their genetic health, and how similar populations are genetically. This will inform conservation efforts for the skinks by identifying the best approaches to boost their numbers and potentially genetic health through population management.

Chester Zoo has been running an ex situ breeding program for the Bermuda skink since 2013, with the aim of reintroduction. Currently due to lack of genetic understanding this would be at an independent site where skinks currently aren’t present. However, through genetic analysis it may be possible to assess which existing sites could have their numbers increased by introducing bred individuals, thus supporting conservation efforts.
