A hiber-what? A hibernaculum! A hibernaculum is a super valuable underground space that can help lots of species hibernate this coming winter.
Learn all about native hibernating wildlife and how their environment affects the population numbers in an area. Encourage more wildlife to your garden by giving them a place to rest and keep safe.
WHAT TO DO TO COMPLETE THE CHALLENGE?
We’d love to see your completed hibernaculum! But before you share your brilliant creation with us, we advise that you follow this advice:
- You can complete this challenge on your own or with friends but make sure you let the owner of the green space know where you have left your hibernaculum so they can try not to disturb it.
- Take a look at our ‘Create a Hibernaculum’ resource below.
- Find a space that doesn’t have many places for animals to hibernate, this can be your garden, a grassy field, or a recovering space that needs just that extra bit of biodiversity
- Also look for spaces that are partially sunny – but don’t worry if you can’t find this!
- Gather your materials and apply your newfound knowledge towards creating a great hibernaculum!
- Take a photo of your underground habitat to apply for your award.
