TAKE ACTION

The winter months can be extremely difficult for birds and other wildlife. Food and water are scarce and low temperatures can be dangerous for birds that can’t find shelter.  So it makes sense that birds would want to flock together for shelter, warmth, protection and to increase their chances of finding food. This is also why it may seem like there are less birds in the winter – they are all gathering together in large flocks, instead of exploring individually or in smaller groups.

Winter can also be difficult on birds finding shelter as all of the trees have lost their leaves. Because of this some birds such as Lapwings will flock and migrate to the south and south-west in attempt to find ice free pasture.

Making a delicious bird feeder can help our feathered friends cope better during the colder months. You can hang these feeders up anywhere (as long as a cat can’t get to it) and they are made from wire and fruit.
