TAKE ACTION

Learn about some of the best berries you can grow in your garden to feed a whole host of native mammals.

These berries will provide food for mammals throughout the summer and autumn, helping them feed throughout summer and fatten up before hibernation. All the plants listed have additional benefits for wildlife, such as habitat for birds, food for leaf-eating insects, and pollen for pollinators.

WHAT TO DO TO COMPLETE THE CHALLENGE?

We recommend following the steps below to get started with planting:

  1. Go to a local garden centre to find the seeds or bulbs you need. Alternatively, buy a sapling and get a head-start on the challenge!
  2. Plant your seeds/bulbs/sapling by following the planting instructions provided when you purchase them. Pay special attention to how much shade each plant needs and place it in a suitable area of your garden accordingly.
  3. Take care of your new plant by ensuring it gets enough food, water, and sunlight. Again, refer to the planting instructions for any special requirements.
  4. Draw a map of your garden, indicating where you have planted your new plants and trees. Take a photo of your work and upload it to Chester Zoo awards.
