We’re SO excited to welcome our first EVER Youth Board at Chester Zoo. This dynamic group of young people from a multitude of backgrounds, are on a mission to empower young people to take action for wildlife.

What is your role on the youth board?

As well as being a youth board member, I’m part of the equality, diversity and inclusion focus group, as well as liaison for the ethical review trustee subcommittee.

What does the zoo mean to you?

Life can be overwhelming so it’s such a privilege to have 128 acres of nature just 40 minutes away. Every visit to the zoo is a real treat, even for four-hour meetings!

Why do you feel so connected and passionate about the zoo and it’s work?

The people; having worked alongside multiple team members within the zoo, what is clear is the dedication each and every one has for the their role in ‘preventing extinction’.

What do you hope to achieve in your role as part of the Chester Zoo Youth Board?

To create change. Chester Zoo has been around for over 90 years, and in that time a lot has changed. People’s expectations of zoos, our understanding of animal wellbeing, and organisational priorities have all changed considerably. Youth governance is key to keeping that all moving forward.

What have you got out of being part of the Youth Board?

Friendships that will last well beyond our two-year tenure.
