In 2022, we launched our first ever Conservation Schools Awards, celebrating the best in conservation education happening in schools across UK.
Categories included Outstanding Conservation School. Outstanding Conservation Educator and Outstanding Conservation Initiative. We also gave certificates to those who were Highly Commended by our panel of judges.
2022 Outstanding Conservation School
Phoenix Primary School
In recognition of their whole school approach to conservation education, our first Outstanding Conservation School is Phoenix Primary School.
A passion for orangutans sparked a school wide movement to help raise awareness of the importance of using sustainable palm oil and how we can make a difference, woven into the fabric of their schools curriculum. With their digital podcast listened from New York and their Twitter takeover they reached out across the globe as well as their local community. An outstanding example of a school empowering their learners to take action for wildlife and our planet.
2022 Outstanding Conservation School
Netherton Moss Primary School
Our second Outstanding Conservation School is Netherton Moss Primary School. Netherton Moss demonstrated their commitment to ensuring that the experiences the children have in school empower their young people.
In the development of an inspiring drama entitled ‘We can Make a Difference’, children of all ages have used their knowledge, skills and talents to educate and inform the school community of the issues around climate change, habitat destruction, species extinction and pollution as well as encouraging families and friends to take positive steps to change attitudes and habits that can have a direct impact upon the planet through the purchasing of products containing sustainable palm oil, avoiding single use plastics and encouraging recycling in every aspect of life.
2022 Outstanding Conservation Initiative Award
Ysgol Cystennin – Sustainable Palm Oil Community
In recognition of their integral role in Mochdre becoming a sustainable Palm Oil community, the winners of our Outstanding Conservation Initiative are Ysgol Cystennin. The passion shown by whole school and community advocating for sustainable palm oil and the preservation of forest habitats for animals like orangutans makes them a very worthy recipient.
2022 Outstanding Conservation Educator
Emily Reid – St Bernard’s Primary School
In recognition of the work she undertakes both in school at St Bernard’s and IgniteZoo project empowering pupils to take action for conservation. Emily ensures that young people are informed and able to take action for conservation issues that are placed at the centre of her school’s curriculum. Emily is an exceptional educator with a deep commitment to supporting conservation education and so is our recipient of the 2022 Outstanding Conservation Educator Award.
Significant Contribution to Conservation Education
Andy Moor – Ignite Institute
In special recognition of his enduring commitment to conservation education, Andy Moor is our 2022 recipient of our Significant Contribution to Conservation Education award. Andy is an inspiring educator, valued member of our curriculum advisory panel and since 2017 has been working closely with the zoo on the IgniteZoo project.
Andy’s commitment to embedding conservation at the heart of school curriculum, his work to empower young people across the trust he represents as CEO and beyond is exemplary. We thank Andy for his continued support of the zoo and our mission and look forward to continuing to work together to empower the next generation of conservationists.
